There are some eateries that are as much about the experience as the food. The 66 Diner on old Route 66 (Central Ave.) in downtown Albuquerque is one of those places. The diner itself has a stylish and authentic Route 66 look and feel in every detail, along with classic diner offerings such as mouth-watering burgers, fries and shakes (the shakes are spectacular). There are also local favorites on the menu such as the Albuquerque Cheese Steak Sandwich, the Sloppy Mark, and the Road Runner to tease your palette.
An Albuquerque Route 66 Icon
With the attention that is now being given to reinvigorating the Route 66 corridor in Albuquerque, 66 Diner already has it down to a science! This is a Route 66 icon that pays attention to the details. From the colorful collection of vintage Pez Candy Dispensers above the front counter to the artfully arranged Route 66 memorabilia, every detail is lavished with spotless attention. Presentation really matters here, and that adds immensely to the dining experience.
66 Diner not only attracts “Mother Road” loving tourists, it also brings in locals who will shine up their hot rod or vintage roadster of choice for a night out that includes a stop at 66 Diner. Its edible entertainment for young and old! Even the simple hot dog seems to taste much better under those kitschy 66 Diner neon lights! At sunset, those stylish Art Deco lines and neon style lights really put on a show!
This is family entertainment at diner prices. So, bring the whole family, a healthy appetite, and a few quarters for the jukebox. Really, 66 Diner should not be missed by anyone who loves Route 66 culture. The streamlined art deco style building is a work of art in itself (the neon lights are stunning at sunset) and is arguably the finest adaptation of Route 66 inspired architecture in Albuquerque.
The food is quite good. The menu has classic roadside diner food with a New Mexican twist. You can’t go wrong with their burgers, fries and a hearty milk shake. Every item I have samples on the menu has been very good. The staff is attentive and the atmosphere is lively. This is Route 66 baby!
You get it all here, great diner food and a memorable Route 66 experience. So, stop on by. You’re sure to get your kicks at the 66 Diner!

I give 66 Diner 5 Stars for its combination of tasty diner style food and that irresistible Route 66 spirit. This is the essence of Route 66. Bring a few quarters for the jukebox, a few friends and a hearty appetite. There is a reason why the parking lot here is always full. Locals and tourists love it for the casual dining and retro atmosphere. Don’t leave without having one of their famous shakes!
