In spite of its relative cultural and commercial isolation, Albuquerque has quietly become a truly eclectic foodies paradise. Whatever you want to eat, you can find it here, without compromise! Frank’s Famous Chicken & Waffles is a great example. The owner, Frank Willis (a former UNM Lobo basketball player) brings a taste of southern soul to the New Mexican high desert!
The menu features savory southern staples like a catfish or shrimp Po’ boy sandwiches, shrimp and cheese grits (a personal favorite), and, of course, chicken and waffles. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and fried with melt-in-your-mouth waffles adorned with cinnamon butter.
The shrimp and cheese grits is an amalgam of peppery southern flavors that goes down like a smooth uptempo soulful classic. Grab a large grape Kool Aid or sweet tea in a Mason jar, and some hot sauce. Pop an old Motown 8-track on the vintage audio gear that lines the walls. Chow down on some tasty soul food classics while old-school tunes play in the background!
If you never sampled American Southern Soul cooking, Frank’s Famous Chicken & Waffles is a great place to start, and a welcome addition to the Albuquerque’s culinary family.
